Skincare Routine Before or After Shower?

Skincare Routine Before or After Shower?

One of the most regular question asked by skincare enthusiasts is usually centered around the right time to have a skincare routine. Is it before or after shower?

Well, we'll tell you that it is always best to do your skincare routine after shower especially if you're using any kind of exfoliant or retinol product.

If you plan on using any kind of cleansing agent or exfoliating product, it's better to do it after your shower when pores are open and unclogged from steam.

That said, I'll be taking you through the different orders you can explore in your routine and how you can maximize the benefits.

Does It Matter Whether You Do Your Skincare Routine Before or After Shower?

It depends on which products you're using.

As a general rule, you should always do your skincare routine after shower. With the exception of toners and other alcohol-based products that can be applied to damp skin, applying skincare products while the pores are open is ideal because they absorb better into the skin.

Products like serums and moisturizers will also absorb more easily into clean, dry skin than oily or dirty ones.

What Order Should You Follow for Your Skincare Routine?

The order in which you apply your skincare products is just as important as the products themselves.

The best way to ensure your skin is getting everything it needs is to cleanse, tone, and moisturize. However, there are different orders you can choose to follow. It depends on you and the type of skin you have.

1. Cleanse, Tone, and Moisturize

Cleansing should happen first so that you can get rid of any dirt or impurities on the surface of your skin. Your cleanser will also help dissolve makeup (if you wear any) so that it's easier for other products to absorb into your skin.

The toning afterwards would help to minimize pores, balance pH levels in your skin, and reduce redness from acne breakouts or irritation caused by cleansing all while helping to get it ready for a moisturizer.

Moisturizing last seals in the hydration from earlier steps as well as protects your skin against environmental damages like UV rays and pollution whilst maintaining moisture balance throughout the day without clogging pores.

2. Face, Neck, Hands

If you have dry or sensitive skin, it's best to moisturize your face and neck after a shower. If you have normal or oily skin using a moisturizer specifically for your skin type is recommended and ideal for after a shower.

If you're using a cleansing oil to remove makeup and waterproof sunscreen, then apply that first as an emulsion step in your routine (after double cleansing).
It will help break down any remaining residue while also providing some light hydration.

For this routine, it is important to start from the face first. Applying skincare products to the neck can then follow.

Once you're done, massage the skin on your hands properly and repeat until your routine is done.

3. Cleanser, Toner, Serum, Moisturizer, Sunscreen

Your morning skincare routine should always start with washing your face with a cleanser. This removes any surface impurities and makeup from the night before so that you can start fresh.

Next use a face toner to balance the pH of your skin.

Apply a serum for nutrients a moisturizer to hydrate and protect from free radicals then finish up with sunscreen to protect yourself from sun damage.

4. Cleanse Tone Moisturize Serum Sunscreen

The basic skincare routine is cleansing, toning, moisturizing, sunscreen and eye cream application. You can throw in a serum if you wish.

Cleansing removes dirt and oil from the skin. Toning balances the pH levels of the skin by restoring it to its natural state while also giving a conditioning effect to skin. Moisturizing hydrates skin by restoring lost moisture.

Using a moisturizer on the entire skin is imperative. A good moisturizer requires definitive ingredients to fully deliver required result. Dermatologist recommended properties in a perfect moisturizer are humectants emollients and occlusives.

Application of a Serum is another way to treat fine lines as well as acne scarring they're usually applied after toner but before the moisturizer.

5. Cleanse, Tone, Moisturize, and Sunscreen

The proper order for skincare products for some people is cleansing, toning moisturizing and sunscreen.

Cleansing removes dirt and oil from your face (and other parts of your body). Toning balances the pH of the skin. Apply a moisturizer to hydrate the skin ensure using a broadspectrum sunscreen SPF30 or higher before sun exposure to protect against UV rays. UVA and UVB rays have the highest damaging effect on skin cells.

You Can Time Your Skincare Routine to Maximize Benefits

If you have a few minutes after you shower, this is an ideal time to do your skincare routine because the skin is softened by the cleansing process and hydrated by contact with water(use lukewarm water in the shower as very warm water dries out the skin) the hydration will better help to lock in moisture.

If you're pressed for time in the morning we recommend using an exfoliating soap once or twice a week because of its dual action of cleansing and exfoliating at the same time a good exfoliating soap will give instant visible brightening result.

Reasons Why You Should Do Your Skincare Routine After Shower

1. The Skin is More Receptive To Skincare Products After Showering

When you’re in the shower, the pores of your skin open up and become more permeable, meaning that they absorb moisture better than if you were just sitting around with them closed up.

This means that when it's time to apply a moisturizer or any other type of product, they'll be able to penetrate deeper into the skin and do their job better than if they were applied before shower.

2. The Skin is Clean and Hydrated

Skincare products are absorbed better when the skin is clean and hydrated. You probably already know how moisturizing lukewarm water can be—it just makes sense to use it as part of your daily routine. The warm temperature helps soften dead cells on top of your epidermis while increasing blood circulation. This leads to a healthier-looking skin overall because it encourages cell regeneration at a faster rate than normal temperatures would allow for alone.

3. Warmth Helps Open Up Pores In The Skin

This makes it much easier for cleansers or exfoliants to penetrate deep enough into the epidermis once the skin is clean of debris moisturizers and serums have maximum effect on the epidermis.
